Is a People’s Artist of the Republic of Moldova, a State Prize Winner and a Holder of the Order of the Republic of Moldova.

In 2001 he was awarded the Gold Medal of the Irina Arkhipova Foundation. Alexandru Samoilă graduated from the Rimsky-Korsakov St. Petersburg State Conservatoire (Prof. Stoller and Prof. Yanson’s class) and from the Mussorgsky Urals State Conservatoire (Prof. Paverman’s class).

Between 1981 and 2003 he was the chief conductor and artistic director of the Moldova National Opera. He has collaborated with the Russian National Orchestra, the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, the New Japan Philharmonic, and the Romanian National Radio Orchestra. Alexandru Samoilă conducted at the Bolshoi Theatre of Russia, the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Musical Theatre, the Mikhailovsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, in opera houses of Kiev, Minsk, Samara, Chelyabinsk, Ufa, Yekaterinburg, etc. He has participated many times in the “Irina Arkhipova Presents” opera festivals featuring world opera stars. He was one of the founders of the “Maria Bieșu Invites” festival and for the last 20 years has participated in organizing the festival, as well as the Maria Bieșu Vocal Competition.

Since 1988, Alexandru Samoilă has actively collaborated with the National Opera of Romania, where he has made a number of important productions. Since his successful performance of Verdi’s Aida in London’s Albert Hall in 1996, he has travelled every season to London and other cities of England, Ireland and Scotland to conduct Bellini’s Norma, Verdi’s Nabucco and La traviata, Bizet’s Carmen, Puccini’s Tosca, La bohème, Madama Butterfly, Turandot and Strauss’ Die Fledermaus. At the same time, since 1990 he has been the chief conductor and artistic director of the Izmir State Opera in Turkey. He has permanently worked with opera houses of Istanbul, Ankara and Antalya, where has staged Strauss’ Elektra, Dvorak’s Rusalka, Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin, Verdi’s Macbeth, Otello, Il trovatore and Rigoletto, Offenbach’s Les contes d’Hoffamnn, Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia, Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore, Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro, Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Zaid, Die Zauberflöte and Don Giovanni. Alexandru Samoilă is a permanent participant in the International Opera and Ballet Festival in Aspendos, for which he has produced Cherubini’s Médée, Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor, Verdi’s Aida and Nabucco, Bizet’s Carmen, Puccini’s La bohème, Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana, Leoncavallo’s I Pagliacci, to mention a few.

On numerous occasions he has been a guest of opera festivals in Istanbul and ancient Ephesus, where he prepared a large-scale performance of Mendelssohn’s Paul oratorio for 4 choruses, soloists and double-cast orchestra dedicated to the 2000 anniversary of Christ’s birth. Alexandru Samoilă has conducted over 60 opera and ballet productions in Great Britain, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Ireland, Scotland, Iceland, Japan, Hungary, Bulgaria, Turkey and Romania.

In 2009-2019, Alexandru Samoilă was the chief conductor of the Odessa National Opera and Ballet Theatre. Since 2019, he has been the chief conductor of the Novaya Opera Theatre.
