Soprano Paula Iancic studied singing at the Gheorghe Dima Music Academy in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. She made her debut as Lauretta (Gianni Schicchi – G. Puccini), Micaëla (Carmen – G. Bizet), Musetta and Mimi (La Bohème – G. Puccini) on the stages of the opera houses in Cluj-Napoca, Timișoara, and Iași.
As a member of the Opera Studio at the State Opera Munich between 2016 and 2018, Paula Iancic performed roles such as Barbarina in Le nozze di Figaro and Papagena in Die Zauberflöte by W.A. Mozart, Gretel in Hänsel und Gretel by E. Humperdinck, Giannetta in L'elisir d'amore by G. Donizetti, Zaida in Il turco in Italia by G. Rossini, Maria in Der Diktator by E. Krenek, a Flowermaiden in Parsifal by R. Wagner, and Oscar in Un ballo in maschera by G. Verdi. On this prestigious stage, she had the privilege to perform alongside world-renowned stars including Diana Damrau, Mariusz Kwiecień, Nina Stemme, Alexander Tsymbalyuk, Christopher Maltman, René Pape, Vittorio Grigolo, Pavol Breslik, Matthew Polenzani, Ermonela Jaho, Ildebrando D'Arcangelo, Olga Peretyatko, Alessandro Corbelli, Ambrogio Maestri, Anja Harteros, Simone Piazzola, Jonas Kaufmann, and others.
In 2019, Paula Iancic had her first collaboration with the Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf, performing the role of Philotis in Schade, dass sie eine Hure war by Anno Schreier (world premiere). In January 2024, she was invited by the George Enescu Philharmonic in Bucharest for the New Year’s Concerts, conducted by David Crescenzi.
In recent years, Paula Iancic has added several major roles to her repertoire: Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro (Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf, Romanian National Opera Iași, Romanian National Opera Timișoara), Violetta Valery in La Traviata (Opera Poznań, Romanian National Opera Iași, Romanian National Opera Timișoara), Liù in Turandot (Romanian National Opera Timișoara), Pamina in Die Zauberflöte (Opera Poznań), Leonora in Il Trovatore, Desdemona in Otello, and Adriana Lecouvreur in the eponymous opera by F. Cilea (Romanian National Opera Timișoara), Amelia in Simon Boccanegra and Aida in the eponymous opera by G. Verdi (Romanian National Opera Cluj-Napoca), Cio-Cio-San in Madama Butterfly by G. Puccini (Romanian National Opera Timișoara, Romanian National Opera Bucharest).
Her vocal-symphonic repertoire includes Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 and Christus am Ölberge, Antonín Dvořák’s Te Deum, Baldassare Galuppi’s Magnificat, Joseph Haydn’s Nelson Mass, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Requiem, Gioachino Rossini’s Messa di Gloria, and Franz Schubert’s Mass No. 2 in G major, D.167, Mass No. 5 in A-flat major, D.678, and Mass No. 6 in E-flat major, D.950.
Her musicality and distinctive timbre have earned Paula Iancic several important awards: Second Prize at the Mozart Competition in Cluj-Napoca – 2013, Third Prize at the Vox Artis International Singing Competition in Sibiu – 2014, Special First Prize at the Alexandru Fărcaș International Singing Competition in Arad – 2015, Grand Prix at the L’Assoluta Virginia Zeani Royal Voice Competition in Târgu-Mureș – 2019, and Second Prize at the Concorso Lirico Internazionale di Portofino, Italy – 2022.
